The One Kiss I Have Been Unable to Forget
This Newsletter is long overdue so I'm doing a small giveaway
I have been gorging on romance these past few weeks. I recently watched Big Love, and it was amazing. This movie gave me all kinds of feelings, and honestly, it's one of the best Nigerian romance movies I've seen in a while. It's one of those stories I watch or read and think, "I wish I had written that."
Also, it’s Bridgerton Weekend for most people, not me, though, because I already finished watching the first part yesterday when it came out, and I enjoyed it.
I'm still unsure how I feel about Collin Bridgerton, but I liked the story. It was easier to follow than the second season, which annoyed me with its unnecessary love triangle. They attempted a love triangle in this third season, too, but it wasn't as bad; it actually made sense. I’m looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds in the next part of this season. Because drama will happen, ghen ghen!
Now, to the main gist of this newsletter —this kiss I haven’t been able to get over.
This scene is actually from a K-drama. Now, we lovers of Korean dramas—I like to call us the OG lovers of Korean dramas, please allow it—we know how much the industry has improved regarding kissing scenes. We've grown from those emotionless, tight-lipped fish scenes to something a lot more delicious.
This particular kissing scene, which I can't forget, is from the Korean drama Captivating the King. Now, I might be overreacting, but how I feel when I watch romance movies or read romance books is very important.
Like with Big Love, I could feel the passion between the actors in this one. I would have thought it was real if I didn't know they were acting or that one of the main actors was married. That's how well they portrayed the scene.
So, here's what happened.
There's a lot to unpack in Captivating the King. I'll try to summarize: This girl has been pretending to be a man for a long time. She is disguised as a man when she first meets the guy who later becomes the king. It's a historical drama, and in those days, there were things women couldn't do unless they presented as men.
She is one of the best badook players in the kingdom. They bonded over badook, and they became friends.
From that friendship, feelings started to develop. Of course, she knew she wasn't a man, and she started having feelings for him. Unaware of her true identity, the king also began developing feelings, but he believed she was a man. In those times, a man couldn't openly fall in love with another man, leading to restrained emotions.
One thing led to another, and the king, needing to solidify his position, betrayed her by condemning her to imprisonment. She disappeared but returned three years later when the king was hosting a badook competition, which she won, of course.
She returned with a plan for revenge but couldn't deny her lingering feelings for the king. She thought she could use those feelings to her advantage. However, after an accident where she was almost killed, the king had to undress her to tend to her wounds and discovered she was a woman.
So, you can imagine how he felt when he found out that all the feelings he had been holding back all these had been absolutely unnecessary.
And this is where they kissed for the first time.
It wasn’t just a kiss; there was a build-up, years of restrained passion from both sides.
The breathlessness, the wordlessness, the tears, everything blended perfectly. The emotions they had suppressed for so long were heavy in that first kiss. It is one of the most beautiful and emotional scenes I’ve seen recently.
And I haven’t stopped thinking about that kiss since I watched the series over three weeks ago. While I would have preferred a better ending for the series, that one kissing scene made up for my dissatisfaction.
With that kiss, no words were needed because it spoke a thousand words, it showed everything.
